Net Run Rate Calculator

What does this calculator mean?

When teams finish level on points, tournaments separate them with net run rate. The net run rate calculator compares how fast a team scores with how fast it concedes across the competition.

A positive NRR means a team scores faster than its opponents; a negative NRR means it concedes faster than it scores.

How to use the net run rate calculator

  1. Enter runs scored, runs conceded, overs faced and overs bowled.
  2. Press Calculate net run rate.
  3. Read the result below the button. Change any value and recalculate as often as you like.

Formula used

Run rate for = Total runs scored ÷ Total overs faced
Run rate against = Total runs conceded ÷ Total overs bowled
Net run rate = Run rate for − Run rate against
Under ICC playing conditions, if a team is bowled out, the full quota of overs is used in the calculation, not the overs actually faced.

Example

Scenario: Across a tournament a team scores 673 runs in 47.3 overs and concedes 548 runs in 50 overs.

  • Overs faced: 47.3 = 47.5 overs
  • Run rate for: 673 ÷ 47.5 = 14.168
  • Run rate against: 548 ÷ 50 = 10.960
  • NRR: 14.168 − 10.960 = +3.208

Frequently asked questions

Why do you convert 47.3 overs to 47.5?

In cricket notation the digit after the point is balls, not tenths. 47.3 overs means 47 overs and 3 balls, which is 47.5 overs as a decimal.

What happens when a team is all out?

For NRR purposes the team is treated as having faced its full allocation of overs, so enter the full quota (for example 50) in overs faced.
